Course Content : Process Design

  1. Mass balance –overall and component mass balance
  2. Energy balance – to decide utility capacity and its optimum consumption
  3. Block flow diagram- for plant capacity evaluation and equipment sizing
  4. Process flow diagram- to understand the flow of the process
  5. Piping & Instrumentation diagram- all process controls and piping specification with equipment capacity with desired MOC and flow
  6. Equipment design –by simulation on software performance of existing equipment or new design
  7. Equipment list- with specification and list of plant equipments and evaluating equipment cost
  8. Data sheets – each equipment is having detail specification sheets prepared the same
  9. HAZOPS- to avoid risk of explosion, fire during runaway or pressurised equipment hazop done and PSV, Rupture disk and control valve install on related equipment.
  10. . Scheduling – GANTT chart prepared for making basic engineering ,detailed engineering and procurement of the equipment and execution and commissioning

Unit operations :

  • Reactors – packed bed reactor ,fluidized bed reactor, batch reactor, CSTR, PFR
  • Crystallizer- batch and continuous
  • Extractor- Batch and continuous (liquid and liquid extractor)
  • Leaching – extraction between solid and liquid
  • Filter -batch and continuous ( Centrifugations /ANF/pressure filter/vacuum filter )
  • Dryer- Batch and continuous(vacuum dryer/steam dryer/Nauta dryer/air dryer /freezing dryer)
  • Distillation column: Batch and continuous(atmospheric distillation/vacuum distillation/extractive distillation /Azeotropic distillation)
  • Heat Exchanger- condenser ,heater and cooler of various type –shell and tube/PHE/air cooler,MEE,FFE
  • Pump and piping – for process and utility flow various type of pump and piping of different MOC is being used to address corrosive flow .line sizing and pump design very important aspects of process industry to be economical.
  • Pressure vessels- for handling various gasses at high pressure and design of these vessels is crucial for plant performance and to avoid any explosion
  • Utility calculation – to evaluate capacity and optimum consumption these calculation done for Cooling tower,Brine ,Chilled water, steam ,air ,nitrogen (Gas/liquid) ,thermic oil
  • PSV/vent sizing –as per API-520/521 and NFPA-30 and to eliminate risk of any fire or explosion hazard design and sizing of PSV,rupture disk,relief valve ,emergency vent ,controls valves
  • Vacuum systems – to do temperature sensitive operations vacuum system of desired capacity and type of vacuum system is studied. like distillation of high boiling component ,drying under vacuum and filtration under vacuum
